conArte: Youth Resilience

Central America
Programme
Human Rights & Civ. Soc.
Gender Equality

Goals

Strengthening the emotional stability of children and youth in Ciudad Sandino, allowing for new forms of affective relationships in the family and its environment.

Participants

Directly involved are 300 vulnerable children, adolescents and young adults from Ciudad Sandino, in the department of Managua. Around 1.200 family members are indirectly involved.

Background

In Nicaragua, 67% of the population is under 34 years of age, children and youth are among the most vulnerable groups and there are countless situations that violate their rights, which also leads to the deterioration of their emotional stability. To counteract this situation, children, adolescents and young adults need alternative places for relaxation, fun, reflection and to promote their artistic expression. This will be done by activities to recognise and control emotions, to find a way to deal with grief and to develop artistic, playful and cultural skills. In addition, love and respect for the elderly and children with disabilities, as well as ecological awareness will be promoted.

Activities

  • Developing artistic identities as a form of emotional expression
  • Artistic skills will be a tool to cope with difficult situations arising from the various crises they experience
  • Offering regular artistic courses in dance, music, theatre and painting
  • Group activities to strengthen their team spirit and their connection to the place where they live
  • Tools are developed to deal with situations and emotions related to crises and stressful situations
