Goal

The Solar Pledge programme aims to improve the service delivery of diocesan institutions in Uganda and Kenya through increased and reliable access to renewable energy.

Advisor

Werner Haberzettl studied Sustainable Design & Environmental Management and has been working in the field of international cooperation for more than 15 years. His particular expertise is in integrated resource management and design, as well as the auditing of green buildings.

Details

  • The advisory assignment focuses on strengthening the capacity of the Archdiocese of Gulu within the Solar Pledge East Africa (SPEA) initiative to promote the sustainable use of renewable energy. The advisor plays a key role in facilitating technical analysis, implementation, and maintenance of Photovoltaic (PV) systems to improve energy service delivery in diocesan institutions.
  • In the capacity building cluster, the advisor supports diocesan stakeholders by engaging scientific partners and delivering trainings to raise awareness of renewable energy potentials and implementation barriers. Additionally, the advisor assists in adapting gender-sensitive energy mainstreaming guidelines to local contexts and coordinates planning processes through active participation in steering group meetings. Particular attention is given to analyzing the energy needs and opportunities of the Health and Education Departments, supporting them in developing targeted renewable energy strategies.
  • In the implementation cluster, the advisor contributes to formulating a robust operations and maintenance (O&M) strategy and trains staff to ensure long-term sustainability of solar energy systems. The advisor further provides support in selecting suitable institutions for system upscaling and repairs, and facilitates procurement processes including tenders and contracting. This includes oversight of equipment installation in both the health and education sectors.
  • By guiding diocesan partners in mainstreaming renewable energy with a gender lens and supporting the installation and upkeep of solar systems, the advisor strengthens institutional energy resilience and contributes to increased access to clean energy solutions aligned with national development priorities and global climate action commitments.
  • SDG targets: 4.4; 7.1; 7.2; 13.3
