Goal

Sustainable and equitable increase in the availability, accessibility and utilization of food.

Participants

Indirectly involved approx. 6.500 people in the two municipalities and directly involved 1,027 people (632 women and 395 young men) from rural households who face problems such as schooling, vocational training and lack of employment.

Background

The Ziguinchor region has great economic potential thanks to its rich forest resources, favorable agricultural environment, livestock farming and tourism, which promotes the region's resilience in terms of food and nutrition. However, this potential is in a situation of progressive degradation, largely due to the effects of climate change, which is manifested by the loss or alteration of vegetation cover, resulting in heavy rainwater runoff that causes erosion and leads to iron accumulation and acidification of rice fields.

Activities

  • Strengthening technical, organisational and management capacities
  • Establishment of vegetable gardens for vegetable production
  • Cultivation of rice valleys using methods adapted to climate change
  • Provision of rice and vegetable seeds
  • Support and guidance in the application of agroecological practices
  • Production of compost and natural organic pesticides
  • Processing and marketing of local products
  • Establishing contacts with microcredit institutions and potential buyers
  • Support and assistance with the formalization of producer organisations
  • Raising awareness among authorities about women's access to productive resources
