Theory of Change

Background

In East Africa, Catholic dioceses play a vital role in delivering essential services like education and healthcare, often in rural areas where access to electricity is limited. At the same time, the Church is increasingly called to lead by example in responding to the climate crisis, in line with Laudato Si’ and broader global goals.

Goal

The Solar Pledge East Africa (SPEA) programme supports this dual mission by expanding access to renewable energy solutions across dioceses in East Africa, specifically in Uganda and Kenya.

Key Pillars

solar infrastructure
• a transnational renewable energy support platform
• energy mainstreaming in diocesan structures
• solar infrastructure development

Our Approach

lasting impact
These components work together to build technical capacity, strengthen institutional resilience, and improve energy access in institutions such as schools and health centres. To ensure lasting impact and ownership, SPEA also raises awareness of climate change and promotes environmental stewardship—enabling the Church to become a visible and credible actor in climate action.

Impact

SDG 7
SPEA contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals—especially SDG 7 on clean energy—advances the message of Laudato Si’, and supports national development plans in Uganda and Kenya.
Indirectly, SPEA contributes to enhanced learning environments and better healthcare in schools and health centres with improved electricity supply.

Outcomes

reliable services
Improved, reliable service delivery in Church-run institutions through access to sustainable solar energy, increased environmental awareness, and strengthened local capacity for long-term system management.
