SCI backs new “Laudato Si" solar project - still more support needed

Solar power for education - supported by SCI

Solar Pledge East Africa (SPEA) supports schools and health facilities in Uganda and Kenya with reliable solar energy—while building sustainable structures for planning and long-term operation and maintenance - read more here.

We have great news: The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative (SCI), already a partner of SPEA, will support our new “Laudato Si Jubilee Project", with a particular focus on education.

SPEA Pilot project: what happened and already is happening

The SPEA pilot (2024–2027) is a three-year initiative designed to tackle energy poverty by improving service delivery in diocesan schools and health facilities through reliable solar energy.

A key focus is sustainability: strengthening structures for operation and maintenance, capacity building, and coordinated energy planning—so systems keep working long after installation.

In the second year of implementation, PV systems are currently being installed at health centres and schools in Uganda. The new systems provide lighting in treatment rooms, enable cooling, and improve learning conditions and safety after dark.

Example interventions are those in St. Theresa Primary School in Otumpili, and St. Joseph Bobi Minakulu Health Center III, both managed by Archdiocese of Gulu. The school is home to 340 students and 23 staff, which has received a 1.4 kW photovoltaic system—and has access to electricity for the very first time. The health center serves over 15,000 people, and for years, unreliable electricity meant patients were referred elsewhere, sometimes at great risk. Now it has uninterrupted solar power—day and night!

New Project: solar power & environmental education

To respond to urgent climate challenges, horizont3000 is planning the Laudato Si’ Jubilee Project as a second three-year initiative under SPEA.
The project combines solar energy provision with environmental education and student-led climate action, aiming for long-term transformation in schools and communities.

Planned outcomes include:

  • Solar PV systems for 14 educational institutions in the dioceses of Gulu (Uganda) and Lodwar (Kenya)
  • Environmental education and student-led climate action in 30 schools (e.g., workshops, toolkits, eco-clubs, awards, climate action planning)

SCI support — and why we urgently need additional partners now

The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative (SCI) is already a platform partner of Solar Pledge East Africa and supports the programme’s approach of accelerating renewable energy solutions through strong local structures and partnerships.
SCI has now also pledged support for the new Laudato Si’ Jubilee Project, and the project will be presented among other projects supported by SCI, at the Special Dinner for Climate Action, personally hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

**This endorsement and seed funding by SCI is an important boost—but to launch the project at full scale, additional funding is still required.

We are therefore looking for new supporters and co-financing partners who want to contribute to a practical solution that directly strengthens education and climate action.**

If you are interested to join SCI as a supporter of the Laudato Si project, please reach out to our Project Coordinator Clemens Griesauer.
