Diocese of Lodwar

Implementing Partner

Our Organsation

The Diocese of Lodwar operates primarily within Turkana County, Kenya, and collaborates actively with neighboring counties and cross-border partners. Its jurisdiction spans all seven sub-counties, covering approximately 77,000 KM2, and serves a population of around one million people, including a substantial refugee community. The Diocese administers a wide network of institutions that deliver essential education, health, and social welfare services.

As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience, the Diocese of Lodwar champions sustainable energy initiatives across Turkana. The Diocese’s renewable energy interventions coordinated by its Water Department’s Pump Maintenance Unit (PMU) include solar power installations and the distribution of energy-efficient stoves. Despite prolonged drought conditions, the Diocese of Lodwar has facilitated the planting of over 14,000 trees in the past years and initiated a community-based climate adaptation program. These initiatives are supported by partners such as horizont3000, Friends of Turkana, Missio Austria, and UNICEF, and collectively contribute to sustainable development and improved quality of life in the region.

Fr. Denis Odongo, Caritas Director

The Solar Pledge helps us harness solar energy to power our education and health facilities. Using affordable and clean energy is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the message of Laudato Si’. As a major service provider in Turkana, this initiative strengthens our capacity to plan, analyse, procure, and maintain solar systems. It enables us to provide enhanced services to our communities and to make better use of the resources we have.
