In June 2024, horizont3000 launched the Solar Pledge East Africa (SPEA) pilot project, a three-year initiative designed to tackle energy poverty and strengthen climate resilience in Uganda and Kenya. This pilot lays the groundwork for a long-term program that will enable Catholic dioceses to plan, finance, and maintain renewable energy solutions.
What is the goal?
The project aims to improve service delivery in schools and health facilities by increasing access to reliable solar energy. It focuses on three key areas:
Why is this important?
Currently, up to 60% of diocesan schools and health facilities lack electricity, and only 2% of existing solar systems are fully functional. This limits education, healthcare, and safety—especially for women and girls. By addressing these gaps, SPEA promotes SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and the principles of Laudato Si’.
Impact so far and ahead
The pilot will benefit over 135,000 students and patients directly. It also introduces gender-sensitive planning, climate education, and robust operation & maintenance strategies to ensure sustainability beyond 2027.
Join us in shaping a cleaner future
The SPEA initiative is more than an energy project—it’s a platform for systemic change. By supporting this initiative, you help create safe learning environments, improve healthcare, and foster climate stewardship in East Africa.
Implementation has started - Below are impressions from the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with key stakeholders and from site visits and a training conducted by the Diocese of Lodwar energy officer.
